A NON-EXTERNAL ENERGY CONSUMING ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR SYSTEM ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency and performance of a rotating biological contactor (RBC) system rotating by the potential energy provided by the influent wastewater. Rigidly-sided styrofoam spheres with a 2.0 cm. diameter and a semispherical hole in the middle placed in cylindrical rotating cages were forming the surface on which bacterial growth took place. Configuration enlarged the surface area of the RBC considerably in comparison to the conventional biodisks. The system was connected to the main sewer of the North Campus of the Boğaziçi University. As a result of the observations made during a five month development period, necessary adjustments were made in order to improve the system. An optimum flow rate was also estimated. Accepting this flow as the average flow, two different wastewater flow programs with five varying flow rates were prepared satisfying different variation patterns, and the efficiency was determined by collecting 81 sets of samples. During the study the behavior of the system under intermittently working conditions was also determined. After a non-feed period of one, two and three weeks, the system was fed and the speed of adaptation and efficiency were determined.
