Özet

SUMMARY The history of Turkish music covers an extensive period of Turkish history; there has been many studies conducted in order to enlighten this period of time. Nonetheless, studies that were too general or conducted in the manner of evaluations are not adequeate enough to enlighten the facts.lt is usually improbable for all the resources to be evaluated since the subject matter is too wide and general to begin with; hence it is inevitably necessary to focus on specific subtopics for the sake of conducting a well-developed study. Consequently it is critical to observe the Turkish music via focusing on each era individually in order to be able to comprehend the influence of each era on the following ones while reinforcing the conception of the continuity of musical culture throughout these eras; within such a perspective the investigation of the music and the musicians of IV. Murad's era is of crucial importance not only to obtain information on the musical background of the era but also to enlighten the influence of this period and its musicians on previous and latter periods in Turkish Music. Covered in this study is the palatial music and musicians that have taken place in the years of Murad IV's dominion. In introduction, firstly, the Ottoman musical culture before IV. Murad's Era is introduced briefly, then the methodology within which the thesis has been prepared is explained, followed by the plan of the study. The first section, provides information regarding IV. Murad's life, his great intelligience for arts and sciences as well as his compositions and its sources. The second section, classifies the musicians that recordedly had lived in the palace. The classification is made according to their education and compositions which were on religious, nonreligious or martial themes. In the third section, firstly, we classified the Sazende, Hanende, Bestekar, Saz şairi, and the musicians originated from Iran that recordedly had lived in the palace. Following, depending on the information from the resources, we explained vnithe musician's lives. In the end of this section, the compositions which were composed by these musicians is listed. In conclusion of the thesis the results emerging from our researches are given. In the attachments sections, we provide a recording of the notes of the compositions conducted by the musicians of the era, resources of which are scientific researches and the Archieve of TRT. IX
