145 SUMMARY This study deals with the legates of Asian Province of the Rome Republic between BC 133 and 31. A statistical classification of the function of these legates ( like legates ambassadors, envoys, lieutenants, Legatio libera, legatus pro praetore) was given in the fourth chapter of this study parallel to the chronological data provided in the third chapter. Their social status, if they were senator or not and if they were magistrate or not was discussed. The fifth chapter deals with the political role of the legates to wards the Asian province of Rome in the periods starting from the or-146 ganization of the province to the first Mithiidatic War (BC 133-88); I. and II. Mithridatlc Wars (BC 88-74); during the III. Mithridatic War (BC 74-67); and to the end of the III. Mithiidatic War until BC 31. In conclusion, in the period between BC 133 and 31, the multi functional role of the above mentioned 36 legates, both from the poli tical and social point of view was very important in determining the diplomatical, political and war policies of the Rome province.
