420 VIII. SUMMARY In this study, the sgraffito ceramics of the Mediterranean Region were treated matter. Two different styles were proved as a result of the study. The basic characteristics of these styles can be ordered like that: 53 ceramics that we examined them in East-Mediterranean, show common features about form, clay, glaze, slip, colour and decorations. These samples body are light brownish-red colored. The surfaces which were embellished are white slip. Generally, the ceramics were glazed with light green, dark green, light yellow, mustard yellow, dark brown and colorless. Colorful glazes are characteristics in this region's ceramics. Broad edged form in the samp les of bowl kinds are widespead. We understand from the samples that geomet rical decorations were used and especially border decorations were preffer- ed. Floral and figurative designs were used lesser in the samples. The samples of this region were produced as a local in Crusader era, between 1200-1268. But 4 samples are ceramics which belonged early Islamic in 9-10 centuries. 74 ceramics, which were examined in West-Mediterranean, show two diffe rent types as“eloborate-thin incise”and“deeply incise”. Both samples body are dark Brownish-red colored. The surfaces which were embellished are cream colored slip.Eloborate incise decorated ceramics are especially transparent light yellow and colorless glazes. Hemispheric type are wide spread in the bowl kinds samples Jhere are geometrical, floral and figura tive decorations in these samples. Generally bird figures are important in figurative ones. All of them we known as early Byzantine ceramics and dated between 1100-1250. Deeply incise decorated ceramics are transparent light yellow and yellowish green glazes. In this type, broad and pit bowls are widespread. In this samples, that we dated them as early 13 century, patterns of octopus.bird and fish are characteristics. In these samples, which all of them were found out from ship-wreck in West-Mediterranean, I think they belonged early Byzantine period. However, 2 samples from this region show similarity with the ceramics of Cyprus which were produced 13-14 centuries. Consequently, two different ceramics styles were proved in both type of the Mediterranean. According to this, a ceramic style, which developed in Syria under the Crusader domination, continued as a local productions421 along the shore from Antioch to Anamur. But in West, while some ceramics aire showing similarity with the samples of Istanbul, Corinth, Sparta, Athens and Salonica, some of them are pioneers of new local style with pure decorations as octopus, fish and bird.
