178 SUMMARY In this thesis, titled“Television Day-Time Serials and Active Women Audiences”, the aim is to contribute to the development of Feminist Television Criticism in Turkey. Turkish women have begun to re-define their places in the private and public sphere and to produce the alternative policies, that include working-life conditions, motherhood, childcare, housework, power relations in family, sexuality etc... They have also begun to examine current communication processes and tried to create alternatives. The women intervention in to the communication sphere has two different dimensions. First of these deals with the women in the Communication Instutions, the second is about mass media messages and women receivers. This research covers the second dimension above mentioned. The main object of the study is to search interaction between women viewers and day-time serials. In the thesis, we have searched to find out answers to the questions on follows:“How and why do the women audiences watch day-time serials ?”,“Do the day-time serials have an important place in regular women viewers' daily life ?”,“How do the day-time serials affect women viewers' cultural and social knowledge ?”In the study, by using a limited sample, data were collected with indept-interviews and an open-ended questionnaire. This kind of research is common in Reception Analysis which claims to go beyond either quantitative or qualitative analysis' shortcomings. The first chapter of the study deals with the intervention of women to ihe social sciences. The second chapter is about communication research and women intervention. The third chapter examines interaction between the audience and television texts, based on Reception Analysis. The following chapter analyses the data gathered from the interviews and questionnaire.179 In the final chapter, the following conclusions have been reached: -The day-time serials have an important place in the daily lives of regular women audiences. -Heavy viewers perceive the fictional world of the day-time serials as“real”. -Most of the viewers find the serials as relaxing. However, some of them get some advices and information that they may use in their daily lives. -Watching day-time serials usually causes interpersonal communication between the viewers. -The day-time serials provide“ a time”and“a space”for women audiences to escape from their duties and responsibilities.
