Özet (Çeviri)
106 SUMMARY This study aimes at giving a picture of economic history of Archaic and Classical Greece and it takes the proposition of“embeddedness of economy in society and all its institutions in non-market (price-constituting) economies”as a starting-point. Therefore, special emphasis is being placed on the non-economic aspects of the economic system of ancient Greece, such as military and political institutions and processes. The second chapter following a brief introduction is intended to give an account of the controversy over Greek economic history, namely modernism -primitivism debate. The works of Weber, Hasebroek, Polanyi and Finley are introduced in order to outline the major problems related to the economic history of ancient Greece and sketch the analitical framework of this study. The third chapter aims at showing the“embeddedness”character of the ancient Greek economy. In order to see that how“the economy”was conceptualized by ancient Greeks, the writtings of Greek philosophers (Aristotle and Xenophon) in economic matters are examined. In addition, the mental habits (i.e. values) which influenced the economic behavior of the Greeks are briefly discussed. The fourth chapter deals with the important issues related to the economic and social history of archaic Greece. These issues are: i) the emergence of“the state”; ii) trade and traders; ii) agricultural world; iv) colonization movement; v) introduction of coinage; and economic and social tensions. In the fifth chapter, it is not intended to give a general picture of economic life of classical Greece but to attempt to study processes of change in social and economic institutions, behavior and values. This chapter is especially focused on classical Athens.107 The topics covered are: i) trade and traders; ii) industry; iii) labour, iv) war and economy; v) state and economy; and economic and social tensions. It is concluded that although ancient Greek economy had some modern aspects, it cannot be classified as“modern”and studied with modem concepts and analiücal tools.
