Özet

Temelleri Antik Yunan ve Roma'nın muhtesem dekorasyon sanatına dayanan Mozaik sanatı en eski, en dayanıklı ve sanat tarihinde daima göz doldurmus sanatsal ifadelerden biridir. Mozaik denince akla Roma döneminde yaratılan eserler gelmektedir. Bu çarpıcı eserlerin yaratılmasında eyaletlerin etkisi açıkça görülmektedir. Bu eyaletlerin en önemlilerinden biri de Anadolu'nun batıya açılan kapısı Efes'tir. Antik Efes Kenti buluntuları da bu etkiyi kanıtlamaktadır. Tez kapsamında bu etkiyi gözden kaçırmayarak, Roma dönemi mozaiklerinin sanat tarihi yönünden incelenmis ve Efes mozaikleri ile yakınlık dereceleri örneklerle belirtilmistir. Yüksek lisans bitirme tezim, üç bölümden olusmaktadır. Birinci bölümde ilk olarak mozaigin tanımı ve hangi kelimeden türedigi, daha sonra mozaigin tarihi ve tarihsel gelisimini saglayan yöntemleri, son olarak da roma sanatı ve roma dönemi mozaikleri örneklerle açıklanmıstır. kinci bölümde Antik Efes Kenti'nin topografyası, adı ve kurulusu, Efes'in önemi, Selçuk Efes Müzesi'nin kazı ve restorasyon çalısmaları, yamaç ev kronolojisi, roma çagında günlük yasam ve yamaç evleri ve son olarak da Roma çagı yamaç ev mozaikleri incelenmistir. Üçüncü bölümde ise mozaik teknigi, uygulanısı ve mozaik çesitleri kısaca açıklanmıstır.

Mosaic art is one of the eldest, time-proof and eye pleasing form of artistic expressions basing its foundations in the decoration arts of ancient Greece and Rome. Works of art created during the Roman period are the ones that pop into mind when mosaic art is mentioned. The influence of the states is clearly obvious in the creation of these striking works of art. One of the most significant of these states is Ephesus, the gateway of Anatolia to the west. Remains of the antique city of Ephesus are proof of such influence. Mosaic works of the Roman period were researched with regard to history of art and their degrees of relationships with mosaics of Ephesus were identified along with examples, without neglecting the influence mentioned, within the context of my thesis. My graduation thesis consists of three parts. The definition of mosaic, from which word it was derived from, the history of it and the methods which provided its development throughout history, Roman art and the mosaic works of the Roman period are described with examples in the first part. The second part includes the topography of the antique city of Ephesus, her name and establishment, her significance, excavation and restoration activities of the Selcuk Ephesus Museum, the chronology of ?hillside houses? (yamaç evler), the life in the Roman age and finally mosaics of the hillside houses of the Roman age are studied. The third part consists of the brief summary of mosaic techniques, applications and types of mosaic.
