123 SUMMARY This study covers an analysis on the role of the mass media with a special emphasis on the role of television in national development and integration. The empirical study focused on the broadcasts of GAP TV which are overlooked as a modernizing agent for the region. Two special programmes -“Gide Gide GAP”and“GAP'a Bakış”- were chosen for the content analysis and these two programmes are subjected to a detailed study to discover their basic characteristics and to discover whether the content of these programmes display the intentions of the communicators. The results indicated that the content of these special programmes do not cover the regional problems adequately and do not reflect the caracteristics of the region. In this respect the content of GAP TV can not be evaluated as a“regional channel”that aims to modernize the region.
