ABSTRACT This research is a M.A. dissertation. The area of the study, Tonya town centre ant its surrounding, is in the Eastern Black Sea Section of Black Sea Region. Tonya is a town that belongs to Trabzon and it is about 65 kilometers away from the city centre. The area of reseacrh is about 25 square kilometers (2498 ha.). In the east of the area Kadiralak high plateau (7 kilometers to the town centre), in the south Biçinlik village (8 kilometers to the town centre), in the west Yarıktaş hill (1314 meters high), in the north Melikşah and Çamlı villages, in the northeast Veli hill (1234 meters) take place. Tonya exibits the characteristics of the Eastern Black Sea Section in when the landscape is taken into account. Streams (Fol river and its branches) formed deep cracks. Tonya town centre which is in the valley of Fol river has a most warm climate of Black Sea because of lying in northern-southern direction of this valley. According to the data given by Tonya meteorology station, the amount of rain is 1011 mm and yearly average heat is 10°C (1964-1980). The neighbourhood settlements within the borders of Tonya municipality are in 700-1300 meters high. These settlements exibit a scattered settlement characteristics. The population of Tonya town centre was 11058 in 1990. The acricultural activities are made in order to supply the need of the families in the area of research. Animal raising is commercial. Industrial activities have it developed yet. The centre of Tonya doesn't have enough economical activities, the town and the population gets lower day by day. Consequently the area of research, is an area that slowly changes and develops little because of the negative influences of the natural environmental conditions to civiz and economical activities.
