European monetary union is one of the examples of most advanced economic integration. The theoretical structure of the monetary union is described by the theory of optimum currency area. Examining the European monetary union within the framework of the theory of optimum currency area displays that the union cannot generate the optimum currency area properly due to the high unemployment rate.The ultimate goal of the theory of optimum currency area is the transition to the single currency. The European monetary union completed its last phase on 1st January 1999 by the transition of the member states to the single currency phase. In conjunction with entry into force of the Euro, the member states of the union,firstly, several non-member states,then, have been affected by this integration period. In addition, Turkey as a member of the customs union, is one of the countries which have been affected by this process. Towards the economic and monetary union, Turkey's compliance with the Maastricht criteria has great significance.
