In our study, Vicia canescens populations, growing on the campus of A tatOrk Uni versi ty has been exami ned cytogenet i call y. I n the popul ati ons, karyotype anal ySi s has been carri ed out and the mei ot i c chromosomal behavi ors have been observed. In addition, the frequency of chiasmata has been determined. For the karyotype analysis, the root tips were stained with Feulfen and squashed. In order to observe the meiotic chromosome behavior young fl ower buds were stai ned with aceto-carmi n. The chromosome number in Vi ci a canescens has been determi ned to be 2n = 10 Never the less, morphological features of the chromosomes (relative length, arm ratio etc. ) showed a canciderable amont of vari at ions. Thi s vari at ion coul d make sense in the 1 i ght of mei ot i c chromosomal configurations indicating the presence of structural chromosomal heterogeity. The frequency of chiasmata has been observed to be 10,34"+ 0,19 per cell. As conclusion, in the observed populations of Vicia canescens chromosome morphologies show large amount of variations. It has been thought, that these variations may be the result of a high rate of spontoneous structural chromosomal mutations.
