The Leyla and Mejnun which is of Arabic origin and which narrates the sufferings of Mejnun, is a most famous story in Islamic countries. It seems that this story has been approached to in a realistic way in Arabic literature but in others, especially in Persian and Turkish literatures it is in a rather romantic way. In all works, the love of Mejnun has been appreciated as a sample of pure love of a human and his suffet~ings have given great excitement to all lts readers and listeners. In the course of time, sufistic themes has been added to the story. In other words, the story has been interpreted in view of ' the teaching Islamic mysticism and ltis reknown as an outstanding type of a human's ascension from humanistic love to divine love. Today, to our knowledge, the story has been written 29 times in Ottoman literature.But now only 18 of these texts are available, others are missing. There is no doubt that the lovliest of them was Fuzuli's. A few works has been done on Leyla and Mejnun stories. All of them being on Fuiul i 's vet'sion of the story, to prepare critical editions of all the Leyla and Mejnun's will be helpfull in examining the differences in the expressional characteristics of various versions of the story and in understanding the poetical features of Ottoman literature in the course of its development.
