In this thesis, the contents of 1250 letters, written by women seeking legal advice, were analyzed. The letters were mailed to a lawyer who was supervising a women's program on television between the years of 1984-1985. The aim was to evaluate some experiential material and to get clues for further research topics. The lower status of women in our society was linked to factors such as socialization, early, imposed marriages, difficulties of getting a divorce, insufficient education and labor force participation of women. In brief, women's dependenc on men and their lack of control over their lives, are thought t be major factors underlying their problems. As information abo~ their economic status was lacking, the economic developmental level of the area they live in was used as an independent variable and types of the problems they experienced were expecte to vary accordingly. To test the expectations, problems were grouped into 5 main categories; problems with the spouse, with families, with children, personal welfare, and other problems. The areas, were also divided into five categories in terms of level of economic development; metropolitan areas, the most developed provinces, the intermediate developed provinces, the least developed provinces and rural areas. Also in reference the learned helplessness model of depression, the causal attributions of women who expressed depressive feelings in their letters were compared to women who did not express any depressi feelings. Women who expressed depressive feelings in their letters were expected to make more global and stable causal attributions for their problems than other subjects although no significant difference was expected to be found between the subjects in terms of making external causal attributions. For all the analyses chi-square test was used. The overall results showed that the subjects of this study mostly suffer from problems related to their spouses and families. Moreover, most of them perceived their problems as caused by external factors. Finally, the proportion of subjects expressing depressive feelings was quite high and, as was expected, they made more global and stable attributions for the cause of their problems compared to the other subjects. The results and the implicati of the study were further discussed.
