Bu tez, T.S.Eliot'un The Waste Land adlı şiiri hakkında yazılan Harold Bloom'un The Anxiety of Influence hareketle bu şiirin analizini amaçlamaktadır. İlgim Bloom'un teorisi hakkında olmasına rağmen, Michael Bakhtin, Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthes, Jacque Lacan, Michael Foucault gibi metinlerarasının kurucularına bir kaç referans da olacaktır. Aslında, The Waste Land bize, Eliot'un şiir dünyasının büyük şahsiyetlerine karşı savaşının arasından şiirin orijinalliği için durmayan mücadelesini gösterir. Bloom' teorisi ölü şairlerin gücünü övmek ancak maaelsef Eliot'un şairlik yeteneğini küçümsemekle dile düşmüş bir teoridir. Modern bir şair olarak, T.S.Eliot sadece şiirsel melankolinden acı çeken bir sanatçı değildir; çünkü Milton'dan sonra ki bütün şairler şiirin güçlü babasıyla yüzleşmek zorundadır. Eliot geçmiş kültürel mirasının bazı metinlerinden ödünç almasına radikal değişmine rağmen orijinal sesini oluşturmadı çünkü seleflerine gereğinden fazla ihtiyacı vardır. Böylece, sadece diğerlerinin seslerini kullanarak konuşabilmektedir.

This thesis aims at scrutinising T.S.Eliot's sophisticated use of intertextuality in the poem, The Waste Land (1922) based on Harold Bloom's The Anxiety of Influence. This utilisation of intertextuality varies from poetic, biblical, to legendary. Grounded on six revisionary ratios, which I support blindly , Bloom's poetic theory is an ill-known one which sings the praises of the strong dead yet sadly makes the belated poet's poetic skills shrink. Terrifically influenced by Harold Bloom's poetic theory of influence, I find it quite apt to interpret The Waste Land as a rewriting of the former artistic traditions. However, there are very slight points which I disagree with bloom, as the thesis will demonstrate. Likewise, The Waste Land does show meticulously T.S.Eliot's uninterrupted strivings for poetic originality through fighting against the mighty dark precursors. Hence, the focus of this thesis is to display how T.S.Eliot, as an outrageous, overwhelmed, and impaired Post-Miltonic poet, tries so hard to overcome these Anxieties of Influence solely by rewriting his precursors antithetically. In fact, Eliot borrows heavily from the previous texts of the bygone poetic heritage, speaks in the voice of others, and he is deprived of authenticity. Apparently, it is a modern world where reading becomes a passion and writing turns out to be an obsession since it is a great misreading of what the canon seems to represent. However, departing from his forebears' immortal texts, I argue that it is undeniable that throughout these anxious poetic processes of rewriting, T.S.Eliot makes use of ironies, parodies, controversies, and he brings about dramatic changes.
