This qualitative case study addresses the question: How does an urban elementary school principal perceive and respond towards unanticipated situations? Chaos theory used as a frame of reference for analyzing and discussing the collected data.One female urban elementary school principal was the participant in this study. She was described as the brave captain who takes her ship from a stormy environment to the harbor safely. Data were collected by interviewing the participant and other key informants, conducting field observations, and examining documents and archival data. Data were coded and analyzed by content analysis. Metaphors were then used to structure and describe the data. Triangulation was supported through using method and source data. Thick description and many of the participant?s own words present a picture for the reader of how this urban school principal deals with unanticipated situations.It was found that the school principal faced many unanticipated situations that can be categorized under three subtopics: program changes, death of students, and administrative changes. When the school principal dealt with those unanticipated situations, she developed some behavior patterns and strategies, such as taking administrative classes, learning from practice, networking, understanding culture and chaos, being aware of what job expects from principals, and having a flexible personality.Although the school principal suggests all these strategies to other school principals, she especially stresses the importance of teaching chaos theory to the prospective principals, as well as having them learn from real situations. Moreover, the existence of unanticipated situations, uncertainty, and constant changes throughout the iiihistory of the school can be indicators of chaos theory. In addition, feedback mechanism, turbulence, the butterfly effect, self-similarity, self-organizations and pattern have been observed from the data as tenets of chaos theory.It was also observed that there was a pattern in terms of changes occurred and having reorder at this school. These cyclical steps are positive feedback, unstability, chaos, self-organization, and order.The school principal claimed that her understanding of chaos theory helped her deal with unanticipated situations effectively, as well as other situations.
