Southeastern Anatolian Development project (GAP) was designed as a usefuldevelopment project for the Southeastern Anatolian Region which is historicallyunderdeveloped region in Turkey. On the other hand, such large dam projects havestrong oppositions because they bring unintended social, economic and environmentalproblems to an area.This study explores the question of whether or not these dams brought capital tothe area and created abundant and cheap hydropower, as well as their effects onMechanization, Industrialization and food security. This research analyzes the extent towhich the dams caused an increase or decrease in the population of irrigation andreservoir areas associated with dam, the reservoirs? effects on the available waterresources, and the reservoirs? problems. The project has caused a large amount ofenvironmental degradation for the associated reservoir and irrigation areas. It has lead todissatisfaction among the residents of the reservoir area but has garnered approval fromthe residents in the irrigated area. The dams and the associated irrigation have not causedsignificant health problems in the affected populations, but there are limited signs ofpotential future health problems in the irrigation area.
