At a time of increased need for efficient mental health services for college students,empirical studies informing these services are vital. Therefore, the purpose of this studywas to investigate the interrelationships between some major personality constructs ofcollege students. Studies with attachment theory propose that how individuals experienceclose relationships has relevance to other areas of their functioning. Finding empiricalevidence linking attachment to measures of wellbeing and psychopathology will helppsychotherapists attain further clarity in interrelationships between major areas of humanfunctioning. Suc h clarity will, in turn, strengthen efficacy of therapeutic interventionswith college students. Therefore, this study investigated if college students? attachmentstyles and their gender were related to measures of wellbeing and vulnerability topsychopathology. Personal meaning was elected as the measure of wellbeing, whereasdepressiveness and trait-anxiety were indicators of vulnerability to psychopathology. Inthis study, attachment consisted of dimensions of anxiety and avoidance.It was viewed as individuals? tendencies and preferences with respect to anxiety andavoidance in close-romantic relationships. Personal meaning was conceptualized as thedegree to which one perceives his or her life as purposeful and fulfilling. Depressivenessconsisted of factors of self-criticism and dependency. Self-criticism refers to tendenciesof perfectionism, whereas dependency has to do with excessive need and concerns aboutapproval and availability of others for one?s sense of identity and wellbeing. Trait-anxietywas viewed as one?s vulnerability to conceive a variety of life situations as threateningand to react to such situations with elevated degrees of fear, tension and anxiety.A convenience sample of college students in personal growth classes in the Collegeof Education at the University of Florida was used. Surveys of the study were given to166 voluntary participants. After attrition, responses of 155 students were included in theanalyses. One hundred seven of these students were female and 48 were male. Dataobtained from these students were analyzed using the simultaneous multiple regressionanalysis, multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses, independent t-tests, andcorrelation matrix.There were results mixed results regarding the relationship between attachmentand personal meaning. Factors of attachment and factors of depressiveness were for themost part significantly related. There was no significant relationship between attachmentand trait-anxiety. Males and females differed only on attachment-related avoidance,dependency factor of depressiveness and trait-anxiety. Personal meaning was notsignificantly related to depressiveness. Implications of these results, limitations of thestudy and directions for future research were discussed.
