This thesis contains a description of the chemistry of some allyl complexes of palladium and molybdenum. Chapter 1 is a review of the synthesis of allyl complexes of transition metals and discussion the chemistry and the application of such complexes in organic synthesis. All the complexes are obtained as a solid and following techniques were used for characterisations: elemental analysis, NMR, IR and FAB-MS spectroscopy. Chapter 2 is a review of the nJ-oxodimethylenemethane complexes of transition metals. Several new ri3-oxodimethylenemethane palladium complexes with bidentate phosphorus Hgands of the type [Pd(n3-RCHCOCHR)L2] have been prepared. Chapter 3 is a description of the synthesis of fr<ms-[PdXPh(SbPh3)2] (X = CI or Br) complexes prepared by the reaction of SbPlvj with several palladium(II) complexes. These reactions involve a novel phenyl group transfer from antimony to palladium. The SbPhs Hgands in these complexes can be displaced by phosphorus and nitrogen donor ligands to prepare convenient syntheses of a variety of palladium(II) complexes. Tlie crystal structures of the complexes [PdXPhL?] (L = SbPh3; X = CI or Br; L = PPh3. X = CI; L2 = bipy, X = CI) and [PdXPhL2]2 (U = dppm, X = CI or Br) are described. Chapter 4 is a description of the synthesis and characterisation of molybdenum and tungsten tetracarbonyl complexes of pyridyl amine Schiff base Hgands of the type [M(CO)4(NAN)] (M = Mo or W). These complexes have been prepared by the reaction of cz$-[M(CO)4(pip)2] with the Schiff base ligands. The crystal structures of the [Mo(CO)4{N(Me)=C(Me)C5H4N}] and [Mo(CO)4{N(Me)=C(Ph)C5H4N}] are described. Chapter 5 is a description of the synthesis and reactivity of tj -allyl complexes of molybdenum of tlie type [MoCl(CO)2(NAN)(ri3-allyl)] prepared by tlie reaction of allyl haiides with [Mo(CO)4(NAN)] complexes. Treatment of [Mo(CO)4(NAN)] complexes with [Pd2Cl2allyl2] also provides a route to these complexes. The crystal structures of two complexes [MoCl(CO)2{N(C6H40Me)=C(?h)C5H4N}(ri3-C3H5)] and [MoCl(CO)2{N(Me)=C(Ph)C5H4N}(ri3-C3H5)] are described. Attempts to synthesis hydroxy allyl complexes of molybdenum by hydroxy allyl transfer reactions with the palladium complex [PdClCn,J-RCHCOHCHR)]2 were unsuccessful.
