Quality management plays a very important role in today's competitive environment. Quality is becoming increasingly recognised as the prime consideration in many purchasing decisions and in order to survive the competition, companies focus on the manufacturing of quality products. Since the majority of companies are small companies, the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in small companies and the advantages that TQM offers in their development has become a very interesting field for research. This dissertation describes the results of an investigation into the implementation of TQM in small businesses. The objectives of the dissertation are to evaluate the beliefs of small business management about TQM and the level of adoption of TQM in small businesses. A mail questionnaire survey was carried out, for this purpose, among small companies located in Trafford Park, Manchester, with the cooperation of Trafford Park Development Corporation. The survey refers both to companies which are not implementing TQM at the present time as well as those that are currently implementing TQM. In small companies the beliefs of top management play a very important role in the attitude of the company towards TQM. It is useful to know what managers believe that TQM is, what are the expectations that they have from TQM, and how they proceed in TQM when they decide to implement it in their companies. In particular, this will be useful for Trafford Park Development Corporation to know what help small businesses need when they decide to implement TQM, so that appropriate resources can be provided. The results are also a useful contribution to the body of knowledge on both TQM and small businesses.
