This empirical study initially intends to provide insights into the evolution of the within-group (residual) wage inequality among female, male and all full-time workers. It investigates to what extent residual wage inequality accounts for transforming the shape of wage distribution in the UK from 1997 to 2009. Additionally, we attempt to estimate how particular observed individual characteristics contribute to wage dispersion within group of workers holding a degree or equivalent, and the workers employed in the service sector. The main results of our study confirm that residual wage inequality is the core component of the overall wage inequality over the period. Nonetheless, the changes in residual inequality within male and female full-time workers virtually show completely opposite patterns between 1997 and 2009. The findings from the econometric analysis on within-group wage dispersion suggest that some of the observable characteristics make , ceteris paribus, significant contributions on within-group wage inequality. Furthermore, the estimates of the contribution vary at the different points of the within-group wage distribution.
