In a highly innovative and grovving market environment, automotive companies are under a constant pressure to release innovative products with rıew technologies in order stay competitive, and more importantly, survive. New products and models are constantly being developed, which makes projects a majör part of the everyday operations that can have a significant effect on the overall performance of the organisation. Today, most automotive companies are using project management framevvorks in order to have a standardized approach to delivering their projects. Although there are many project management framevvorks available to companies who have not yet matured in their project management practices, there are not any available that are specifically targeted towards automotive projects. Since automotive poses many significant challenges that are characteristic of the sector, a study of best-practices in automotive project management is required to provide an understanding of how popular project management framevvorks can be applied in automotive. Therefore this study wili identify the best practices in automotive in order to provide guideiines for achieving excellence in automotive project management. The study begins with an overvievv of the literatüre concerning excellence, automotive best-practice and project management best-praetice. Certain factors are identified from multiple sources as factors contributing to excellence in automotive project management. Using these factors and the excellence framevvorks, a model is created for assessing the performance of the project management practices in automotive. The model is not created with the purpose of project performance assessment, but to derive points of improvement within the model so as to create guideiines for automotive project managers in achieving excellence. In order to test the validity of the model, as well as İdentify further factors vvhich contribute to excellence, İnterviews with project managers in successful automotive companies are conducted. A qualitative analysis of the intervievvs shows that the model is partially valid, although it requires further improvement. At the end of the analysis, a total of 14 factors are identified and validated as areas vvhich project managers will need to look out for, and for every factor, suggestions are given as identified from the literatüre and the intervievvs. These factors and suggestions provide guideiines to automotive project managers for achieving excellence in project management.
