Özet (Çeviri)

A large and growing body of literature has demonstrated that affective stimuli enjoy preferential access to awareness during pre-conscious exposure to words, pictures and sounds. Despite over a decade of research, debate remains elusive on the issue of the extent to which negative stimuli is privileged over positive stimuli. The purpose of the current study was twofold. On the one hand, a relatively new concept, food attitudes, was tested under very brief presentations of words to investigate whether an emotional versus negative advantage would be observed in accessing perception. On the other hand, the role of affect on the automatic attitude activation paradigm was examined with food words. Interestingly, inconsistent patterns were observed in both attitudinal and emotional domains. Overall accuracy rates revealed that under restrained conditions, 33ms stimuli exposure; negative stimuli enhanced detection to a greater degree than positive stimuli. Nevertheless, the pattern was reversed in the food task by revealing an advantage towards neutrally valenced food words relative to their emotive counterparts. Despite the fact that none of the food categories were better processed than another, analysis of the extremely valenced food categories demonstrated emotional bias, regardless of polarity, for the experimental groups. Further discussions are held in light of the Food Specific Attitude Structure model by Aikman et al. (2006), and the generalizability of the automatic attitude activation paradigm is cross-examined conditional upon affect.
