Özet (Çeviri)
Police require voluntary public support in order to be effective in fighting crime and maintaining social order. Numerous studies indicate that people more likely to support the police and police procedures primarily when and if they view the police as possessing legitimate authority. Therefore, legitimacy lies at the heart of the police effectiveness and public support. Conversely, previous studies demonstrate that an effective and continuous communication can increase perceived police legitimacy and public attitudes towards police. A growing body of research suggests that the advent of social media and extending use of mobile devices has created unprecedented opportunities to increase perceived police legitimacy by providing continuous and effective communication between the police and members of the public. Recognizing the presumed capacity of social media to enhance perceived police legitimacy, police forces all around the world are increasingly using social media as a new method of communication to reach and engage with the public. Although police forces are increasing their presence in social media as a means of communicating with the public, research about the impact of police use of social media on public attitudes, especially on perceptions of police legitimacy, is limited. Yet police legitimacy plays a crucial role for police effectiveness. In order to contribute to the limited research in this field of the research, this study conducting a survey of 87 participants investigated the impact of police use of social media on public attitudes and especially on perceived police legitimacy. The findings suggests that police use of social media, as a new method of communication to reach and engage with the public, can have a positive effect on public attitudes and enhance perceived police legitimacy.
