The 2002 elections were one of the important milestones in the modern history of Turkey. Since the election, Turkey has been going through a considerable transformation socially, politically and economically. This transformation process has unavoidably affected Turkish foreign policy. In this conjuncture, as a chief foreign policy advisor to the Prime Minister since 2002 and as Foreign Minister since 2009, Professor Ahmet Davutoglu has played crucial role in shaping the new foreign policy. Davutoglu's doctrine of“Strategic Depth”in Turkish foreign policy was theorized through his academic work of international relations book of the same title in 2001. The main argument of“Strategic Depth”is that a nation's value in world politics is predicated on its geo-strategic location and historical depth. In this respect, Turkey is uniquely endowed both because of its location in geopolitical areas of influence, particularly its control of the Bosporus, and its historical legacy of the Ottoman Empire. This dissertation will initially examine the roots of the new Turkish foreign policy, and then analyze the doctrine of“Strategic Depth”in the context of“Zero Problems with Neighbours”policy.
