Özet (Çeviri)

This four-year ethnographic study examines children's collaborative play and digital literacy practices in commercially designed virtual play worlds; my study participants consisted of groups of children aged five to eight years of age in an afterschool setting. The field in which I conducted my research included two environments: the computer lab associated with an afterschool program and Disney's Club Penguin virtual world. I conducted participant observation, took field notes, interviewed the children, and videotaped the children's online and offline interactions in order to explore the goings-on regarding their online (i.e., virtual world) and offline (i.e., computer lab) engagements; the research occurred while the children played in Club Penguin in the afterschool program. I also conducted cyber-ethnographic research using my own avatar in Club Penguin, observed online players' interactions, and examined frequently occurring practices in effort to better understand my study participants' interactions. As a theoretical framework, this dissertation adopts the Mediated Discourse Theory, which draws upon the constructs of two main theories: mediation in the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (Vygotsky, 1978; Wertsch, 1991) and capital and habitus in the Practice Theory (Bourdieu, 1977; 1986). In my analysis, I focused primarily on how the commercial design of Club Penguin affected the children's literacy and participation practices. Club Penguin has two membership types: basic membership, which is free of charge and requires only an email address for registration purposes, and paid membership, which requires a monthly subscription fee of $7.95 and provides members with additional features, including unlimited access to virtual goods and virtual places. This study reveals that having a paid membership increased the quality and quantity of children's literacy practices, and it encouraged them to engage in more activities with their play partners. The study further reveals that the children found Club Penguin's twotiered membership model unfair, and they took a critical stance. Under my guidance, the children wrote letters to Club Penguin, made comments on the official Club Penguin blog posts, and created YouTube videos in effort to affect change regarding this design feature.
