In recent years of the Syrian Conflict, the Kurdistan People's Party's (PPK) clash with another outlawed terrorist group DAESH has impacted on the representation of the PKK in the Western media. In particular, the BBC has begun to gloss over its internationally recognized status as a terrorist organization. Especially, in the last two years, the BBC News' coverage of the group has diverted from its earlier portrayals. Drawing on relevant theoretical concepts such as Stuart Hall's representation, Nick Couldry's media power, Michel Foucault's knowledge/power and Edward Said's orientalism, this dissertation uses Critical Discourse Analysis to compare and contrast the BBC's news coverage of the PKK before and after the onset of the Syrian Civil War. The analysis aims to discuss to what extent the BBC's coverage of the PKK might have discursively remained consistent or changed, by drawing on a number of online news texts and pictures. This study has argued that despite both the persistent deployment of the“rebellion”discourse about the group and its illegal status being invoked in the news reports, the samples have uncovered various instantiations of a discursive shift that have emerged since the beginning of Syrian conflict. The remarkable findings suggest that a discursive shift on the depiction of the PKK arisen in the BBC news has blurred and obscured the group's criminality, illegality and illegitimacy.
