The problem of evil and the notion of theodicy have been central issues in ethics and the philosophy of religion for centuries. With the influence of secularization debates, theodicy has been regarded as relatively less significant in terms of its societal effects. However, arguments that oppose secularization theory point to the importance of exploring the function and role of theodicy in the contemporary world. The outcomes of traditional theodicy studied at macro levels thus continue to require consideration in order to comprehend how contemporary theodicy functions. Consistent with changes in the political agendas of dominant groups are what we label as good and evil changes (Messiade, 1996). The suffering of people on the basis of gender, class, race, and religion is still an issue highly related to theodicy, yet the masses that constitute these“Others”have partially changed (compared with the Middle Ages). Employing critical hermeneutics, this paper examines how mainstream horror film substantively reproduces theodicy, discourages individual agency, punishes the other and maintains the status quo. I use a combination of ideological and mythological criticism to analyze three horror films: Bram Stoker's Dracula by Coppola (1993), From Within by Papamicheal (2008), and Straw Dogs by Lurie (2011). I further explore deeply rooted ideologies and cultural mythologies reproduced within mainstream horror cinema.
