This study addresses the relatively unexplored issue of correlates of the card-not-present fraud and the effect of fear of card-not-present fraud on behavioural adaptation and preventive measures. Recent studies have suggested that the lifestyle and online activities of Internet users plays an important role in their own victimization. However, little is known about the online and offline correlates of CNP fraud victimization. This study applies the Life-style Routine Activities approach as the theoretical framework. Using Crime Survey England and Wales (2013-2014), binary logistic regression analyses suggest that identity theft is the most significant precursor to CNP fraud victimisation. Risky online behaviours appeared to be associated with increased risk of victimisation. Results pertaining to the effect of fear of CNP fraud victimisation and past CNP fraud victimisation experience suggest that these two factors have significant impact on both behavioural adaptation and increased preventive measures. Overall, these findings appear to support the proposition of victim precipitation in CNP fraud victimisation. This study has an impact to the knowledge and understanding of card-not-present fraud victimization for policy makers and law enforcement bodies as well as for credit card users.
