SUMMARY With lhc collapse of Ihe Mongolian (Turkish) Empire, the seven-century-long Moslem domination came to an end in the Indian Peninsula. The English, who had initially come to India for commercial purposes, began to assert their presence through the trade centers and educational institutions they established. The 1857 uprising gave the English a chance to strengthen their domination of the peninsula. Following the uprising many people were executed by the English on the grounds that they had participated in the rebellion. One such person was Maulawi Bakir Ali, Azad's father. The relations the Indian-Moslems and the British were at the outset tense and cold. However, eventually the two peoples came to realize the need for understanding each other and establishing closer ties. Their effort to understand each other's language and culture gave rise to the establishment oi" many new organizations. Educational institutions such as the Delhi College and the Aligarh College were particularly important in that they trained world famous literary authorities. Muhammad Husayn Azad is well-known for the novelties he introduced in Urdu literature. As one who had been exposed to the literary and scientific atmosphere of the Delhi College, Azad did every thing expected of him to fulfil the requirements of his time. He was a writer, a poet, a critic and a historian. However, he gained more fame as a writer. In recognition of his contribution to Urdu literature, Azad was awarded the title of Şams-ul ulama (the Sun of Scientists). It is an undeniable fact that Azad had a style only peculiar to him. 82
