SUMMARY OF THE THESIS This research covers the history of the western paer of Libya. In particular, the area of Tripoli between the years (1881-1911). The choice for the period was based on the fact that Tripoli was the last remaining areas of the Otman, Empire in north Africa. This research consists of a historical introduction covering the era between (1551-1881). Four chapters covering the history of different regional rulers. Also, the adminstrative, social and economic sides have been tackled. The thesis discusses the Italian cultural and social activities prior to military occupation. Chapter one, the rulers of this period and their accomplishments have been fully explorated. Chapter two, the adminstrative side of both Tripoli and Benghazi has been studied, In particular development of adminstration at the Otoman era. The third chapter, three important cases have been studied. Firstly, the economy of the regional areas has been covered. These include, agricultural and general economic status. The social growth of the area and different social aspects such as marriage and diverse. Different govermental agencies that were establisded by Otoman's have been covered. The cultural and eductional aspects such as, eductaion, publishing and journalism was also included. In chapter four. the historic presence of the Italians in Tripoli was covered. This included the Italian missions to control the social and economic life in the area before military involvement. The military capabilities of the Otoman's such as, number of soldiers and fighting capabilities was covered. A brirf coverage of the Italian occupation of Libya was included. By the year 1912 and according to Ushy-Losan treaty, the Otoman presence ended in the area of Tripoli. Included with this research are some important documents to support our conclusions.
