International students' homesickness and depression: Associations with mood regulation expectancies, acculturation and attachment

I examined negative mood regulation expectancies, acculturation and attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance as predictors of homesickness and depression among 188 international university students in the United States. Negative mood regulation expectancies is one's confidence in one's ability to alleviate negative mood states. Attachment anxiety relates to constant worrying about whether one's significant other will be available and responsive, whereas attachment avoidance refers to refraining from establishing close relationships with others. Survey packets contained the Acculturation Index, the NMR scale, the Homesickness Questionnaire, the Relationship Structures Questionnaire and the Depressive Symptoms Inventory. Correlational analyses revealed NMR expectancies were positively associated with acculturation, and negatively associated with attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, homesickness and depression. Attachment avoidance correlated with acculturation and homesickness. Students who had lower levels of attachment avoidance were more likely to explore the host culture and were less likely to experience homesickness. Multiple regression analyses further revealed that higher negative mood regulation expectancies, lower attachment avoidance and anxiety, and more homesickness each independently predicted lower depression. Those students who do not believe that they can alleviate their negative moods, those who feel anxious about establishing close ties with peers, and those who feel homesick are more likely to experience depression. This study supports the view that depression and homesickness are different constructs with varying patterns of predictors.
