This paper, using a model which explains the relationship between the initial economic and social factors and population and economic growth in cities, and basing on convergence theory, describes the determinants of these two dependent variables in 1990-2000 in provinces of Turkey. In terms of population growth, the results suggest that initial education level and literacy rate of female has a negative effect on population growth of provinces, construction share of economy is positively correlated with subsequent population rise. Initial share of mining increases the income growth of population in a province, whereas the provinces that have higher mining share experience a negative population growth. The provinces in East Anatolia and South Eastern Anatolia are more likely to have a positive population growth, but the coefficients for other regions are insignificant. As for economic growth, education level appears to be not significant for subsequent GDP per capita growth, but initial share of male students decreases the growth rate. The share of male that are unpaid family worker in employed population has also negative impact on subsequent income growth. Provinces that are in Aegean tend to experience negative economic growth, while it is more likely for the areas in Black Sea region to enjoy GDP per capita increase in this period. Convergence across provinces is tested and it is found that a standard deviation (52 %) increase in initial population growth causes roughly 3.4 % annual decrease in subsequent income growth in1990-2000 in Turkey.
