INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer is a common and fatal disease. The most common complications in the postoperative period are anastomosis leak, ileus, intraabdominal abscess and infection. Mostly these infections are caused by bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract. It has been shown that probiotics used pre- and postoperatively significantly improve intestinal microbial flora, reduce intestinal permeability, reduce infectious complications, antibiotic consumption and hospital stay, and improve quality of life of patients. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether the use of probiotic preoperatively reduces postoperative complications in patients undergoing colorectal surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent colorectal surgery due to cancer were divided into two groups as those who used regular probiotics for 5-7 days (GRUP P, n=20) and who did not use any probiotic products during the preoperative period (Grup C, n=20). Complications and hospital stay were evaluated in patients with postoperative period. Major complications such as anastomosis leak, anastomosis stenosis, surgical site infection, wound infection, wound separation, lung infections, respiratory distress, and embolism were followed. RESULTS: There was no any anastomosis leakage in the patients who received preoperative probiotic and 4 patients (%20) who did not take probiotics had anastomotic leak (p = 0.03). Postoperative wound infection was 30% (40% 10%, p <0.028) and lung diseases 45% (65% vs 20%, p = 0.004) decrease in the postoperative period. Postoperative ileus was less than 35% in group P compared to group K. In addition, the mean length of hospital stay was significantly reduced in these patients (8.8 ± 2.6 versus 17.6 ± 7.3 days, p <0.001). DISCUSSION: Probiotics significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing colorectal surgery due to cancer and significantly shorten the mean length of hospital stay.
