Summary: Corruption can occur in any society. The larger the corruption and the higher the government officer involved in, it is the more the media pays attention to it. Since“negativity”and“elite people”are highly accepted news values, corruption scandals get to be news on the media. In corruption stories, journalists depend on the situation definitions of the news sources who were usually police authorities, court reports and the witness accounts of the event in our sample. To expose the coverage of corruption in Turkish daily press, a discourse analysis is conducted on the news of five national dailies by adopting van Dijk's methodology. The results supported the assumption that corruption is defined as crime through moral norms and legal codes. Thematic dimensions of Civangate Scandal is“the state banks”,“the period of Özal government”,“the clean hand operations”and“the legal system”. According to the media there exist two reasons of corruption in Turkey: One is the moral norms championed by the new right ideology of the Özal governments and the second; state banks. The general convention of the media to solve the problem of corruption is projected as“privatization”. Media is the most important actor implementing and imposing the new right ideology and it becomes an actor in creating the consensus on privatization by mediating the quotation of power elite in its coverage. The discourse of the news includes descriptions like“booty”,“pillage”and“stolen public goods”to emphasize the importance of corruption. 164
