This paper engages with the phenomenon of meme usage in a political context and as a tool for influencing candidate / issue perception. It seeks the answer the question of how have political memes played a role in the 2016 US Presidential elections and the greater significance of their increased influence. The paper defines the parameters of what constitutes a meme, how it can be used as a tool for politics, and situates the debate in contemporary context by looking at how political memes changed candidate / issue perception during the election process. Combining elements of political polarization, political resistance, and Guy Debord's 'Society of the Spectacle', this paper analyses some of the most popular memes of the election in terms of virality and effect on political discourse, and through a critical visual discourse analysis of said memes, argues that political memes in the 2016 election served as a way for people who felt dispossessed or ignored by the narrative frames given in American mass media structures to re-shape the discourse to mirror their perceived absurdity as a form of political resistance against a media and political mechanism that feels constructed and is based on 'performing' politics rather than actually doing substantive politics. What that means for the American political-media system is further detailed throughout the analysis and the conclusion.
