This dissertation seeks to add to the historiography surrounding Early Modern interactions between the Islamic east and Christian Europe by exploring the image of the Turk in Early Modern England. Although historians agree that the European image of the Turk throughout its history starting from the beginning of its existence was a result of mutual misunderstandings, historians have been divided with their views on the nature and characteristics of what that image is. Different scholars have come up with different explanations of what the European image of Turk is. Many approaches have been taken to explore the image of the Turk in Early Modern England however I will only be focusing on the image of the Turk in travel accounts from three Englishmen who travelled to and through the cities of the Ottoman Empire during the same period of time, but had different experiences with the Turk. The first chapter will begin with a brief overview of the position of England and the Ottoman Empire within the international context at the time; a weak and isolated England who became the enemy of Catholic Europe, compared to a powerful Muslim Ottoman Empire; at the peak of its conquests and power. This will then link into how the circumstances of the time led to Queen Elizabeth seeking the friendship of the Ottoman Empire: the political and economic developments that affected England and the Ottoman Empire during the sixteenth century such as the protestant reform and the Ottoman conquests. The Second chapter will explore the diary of Dallam, a musician who was chosen by Queen Elizabeth I to take a musical instrument, an org, to the Ottoman Sultan as a gift from England, this time to preserve and strengthen the relationship between the Ottomans and the English. From Dallam's account, we gain an understanding of Anglo-Ottoman interactions from a different dimension; because of the fact that Dallam is neither a merchant, ambassador or a clergyman, he is merely a musician. In this chapter we will see the admiration and fascination towards the Ottoman Culture and its military power, but also fragments from the Medieval image if the Turk that lingered through to the image of the Turk in Elizabethan England. The final chapter will be concerned with Sir Anthony Sherley's voyage to Persia in 1598. . The volume, Sir Anthony Sherley and His Persian Adventure, from the series, is of great value to understanding the image of the Turks in Elizabethan travel writing and Anglo-Ottoman interactions due to the fact that it contains contemporary narratives from the companions of Sir Anthony Sherley on his journey to Persia. By exploring the travel accounts which emerged as a result of the voyage, I will be illustrating that the interactions with Turks on the way and the perceptions of the Turks were fundamentally influenced by politics of the current period; the Ottoman threat.
