Özet (Çeviri)
It is a well-documented fact that prejudice against Islam and Muslims in the western world has been in existence for quite some time; however, it has been argued that the attack on the Twin Towers can be considered as the breaking point of this tense relationship, which consequently caused the emergence Neo-Orientalism. Neo-Orientalism is a discourse that aims to paint a negative picture of Islam and Muslims in general by using one of the most effective means of 21th century: the media. Although, the aforementioned discourse can be most easily observed in news media, its influence can also be seen in cinema and literature; this is why this study aims focus on the ways in which Neo-orientalism makes itself clear in literary works. In order to achieve this, the historical development of the West - Islam relationship was examined to determine how Neo-Orientalism came to existence, along with how it relates to Tuastad's New Barbarism, and two post-9/11 novels (written specifically by non-Muslim authors to avoid claims of bias in favour of Islam and Muslims) were chosen; Terrorist by John Updike and The Submission by Amy Waldman. Literature survey and literary analysis were used to examine the said novels in order to study how Neo-Orientalism functions and how it can be seen both in media and in the attitudes of ordinary people who have been exposed to the influence of the discourse. At the end of the study, it has been concluded that the novels differ from each other in the ways they deal with Neo-Orientalism; while Updike's Terrorist helps to contribute to the discourse through its predictable plot and stereotyped characters, Waldman's The Submission functions as a reflective surface on which we can observe how Neo-Orientalism functions and how its influence through media affects people and their opinions.
