Over-the-counter derivatives have emerged in financial markets towards the end of the 20th century. Their flexibility in line with the needs of their customers and availability for hedging and arbitrage transactions have made them advantageous in the eyes of derivatives markets participants. On the other hand, their suitability to make great profit by taking speculative positions with these products causes serious risks for the entire financial system. It is stated by financial authorities that the financial derivatives products were a major contributor to magnify the 2007 – 2008 global financial crisis. This study sets out the regulatory reforms for central clearing obligation of over-the-counter derivatives in European Union laws after the 2007 – 2008 global financial crisis and the possible negative effects of this novelty to the financial markets.
