Özet (Çeviri)
With cereal products being the most important source of nutrients and energy in the human diet, and wheat being the most consumed crop globally, spelt -one of the most ancient cereals- is increasing its share in the food market because of its ability to grow under low inputs and the belief about its high grain quality. There is evidence that nutritional quality of crops is influenced by environmental conditions, variety choice and agronomic management such as fertiliser type and irrigation. However it's not well known which agronomic practices and the interactions between them are affecting spelt grain nutritional quality, which varieties are suitable and if there are any interactions between variety choice and agronomic management in spelt grown in semi arid climates. The content of nutritionally relevant compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, protein, and macro-micro nutrients was therefore measured in the grain of various spelt varieties grown under different fertilization types and irrigation regimes in a semi-arid climatic area in Crete, Greece. Preliminary results showed that fertility type, irrigation and variety choice were the main drivers for grain yield and protein content while the effect of variety choice was the main driver for grain quality parameters such as grain phenolic/ flavonoid content and antioxidant activity. Significant interactions between fertility type and variety choice is showed the ability of each variety to perform differently under different conditions. Next step of our research could be repeating the trials for more seasons as well us testing more varieties suitable for warm climates. Results would be used for the development of novel management protocols to improve yield and quality of spelt wheat for wheat grown in semi-arid areas under low input as well as the selection of varieties suitable for those growth conditions.
