Adjustment is defined as an operation in which components of a product are moved or changed in order to achieve required geometrical functions or to compensate unescapable deviations during manufacturing or assembly processes. Although the literature survey shows that adjustment is not often considered as a value-adding process, consideration of product adjustment action in product development phase can be less costly than precise manufacturing with tight tolerances. Consideration of adjustment in early stage of product development plays very crucial role since adjustment has a huge impact on product design, tolerance arrangement as well as manufacturing and assembly process. The main task of this thesis is the derivation of approaches that can support the designer, when considering adjustment in the context of product as well as process design. Such approaches were described in means of their benefits, and the ways they support designers in this particular case of product development to reduce effort, time and cost. Within this scope, first of all, broad literature survey was conducted to clearly define fundamental terms such as; adjustment, geometrical function and product development process. Then, need for generic adjustment planning process in the integrated product development process was investigated and defined. Furthermore, the unique characteristics of adjustment were clarified. Based on the findings, possible adjustment planning approaches were defined and requirements regarding these approaches were stated.
