This study investigates whether Twitter can be considered as a public sphere or not based on German philosopher Habermas' public sphere theory, and how it changed the way people express their political opinions by enabling a wider political participation due to easy access. Habermas' Book 'The Structural Transformations of the public sphere' constitutes the theoretical background of this paper and some other scholars' work such as American critical theorist Nancy Fraser will be mentioned as one of the most famous studies that came up with critical points against Habermas' public sphere theory. The July 15th coup attempt in Turkey is used as a case study where civilians mobilized through social media and took it to streets to stop the coup attempt. A qualitative content analysis of a number of tweets posted on that by authorities, twitter celebrities and those who were on streets was conducted to test the relationship between the Twitter usage and the failure of the coup attempt. In conclusion, this study showed that Twitter cannot constitute a proper public sphere. However, it can provide an online platform in which people can mobilise quickly during critical political events, something that would not be possible via 'mass media'.
