Özet
Bu tez, Osmanlı'nın son yüzyılından Türkiye'nin yakın dönemlerine kadar geçen sürede ulusal sembollerin nasıl inşa edildiğini ve son otuz yılda bu sembolleri dönüşüme uğratarak üretilen çağdaş sanat eserlerini analiz etmektedir. Birçok ulus devlette görüldüğü gibi, Türkiye'yi temsil edecek semboller de zaman içerisinde farklılıklar geçirmiştir. Osmanlı'nın son yüzyılındaki temsiliyet politikaları erken Cumhuriyet döneminde yerini seküler-milliyetçi temsil politikalarına bıraktı. Ancak 1990'lardan itibaren bu durum, dindar-milliyetçi partilerin güçlenmeye başlamasıyla yavaş yavaş değişti. Yine 1990'lardan başlayarak Türkiye'den birçok çağdaş sanatçı ulusal sembolleri eserlerinde kullanarak resmi kimlik politikalarını, ulusun temsiliyetinde yaşanan dönüşümleri, devlet otoritesini ya da devletin fail olduğu kimi suçları tartışmaya açmaya çalıştı. Sanatçılar ulusal sembolleri yapısöküme uğratarak bu sembollerin kapsamını ve neyi temsil ettiğini sorguladılar. Bu tez bir yandan ulusal sembollerin inşasını ve bir kısım sanatçının bu süreçlere nasıl katkı verdiğini incelerken diğer yandan son otuz yılda bu resmi anlatıyı yine ulusal sembollerin formlarından yola çıkarak sorgulatan atmışa yakın eseri tartışmaktadır. Tez, bu eserlerin iki düzeyde ihlaller gerçekleştirdiğini öne sürmektedir: siyasal-hukuksal ve sanatsal. Bu ihlaller yoluyla bu eserler devletin milli kimlik inşasının dışarıda bıraktığı bireylere dikkat çekmeye ve devlet-toplum ilişkilerinin demokratikleşmesine katkıda bulunurlar.

This thesis analyzes how national symbols have been constructed from the last century of the Ottoman Empire to the recent periods of Turkey and discusses the contemporary works of art produced using the same symbols in the last thirty years. As seen in many nation-states, symbols to represent Turkey have also undergone differences over time. The representation policies of the last century of the Ottoman Empire were replaced by secular-nationalist representation policies in the early Republican period. However, this situation gradually changed in the 1990s as religious-nationalist parties began to gain strength. At the same period of time, namely starting from the 1990s, many contemporary artists from Turkey used national symbols in their works to open up official identity politics, transformations in the representation of the nation, state authority or some crimes that the state was perpetrator for discussion. By deconstructing national symbols, artists questioned these symbols' scope and what they represent. This thesis, on the one hand, examines the construction of national symbols and how some artists contributed to these processes. On the other hand, it also discusses nearly sixty works of art produced in the last thirty years that have questioned this official narrative through playing with the form of national symbols. The thesis argues that these works make transgression on two levels: politico-legal and artistic. Thus, these works draw attention to the individuals excluded by the state's national identity construction and thus contribute to the democratization of state-society relations.
