The electricity consumption of building operations accounts for nearly three-quarters of the total electricity produced in the US, and the electricity consumption of Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems has a major share in this amount. Therefore, improving the operational performance of HVAC systems has become a crucial goal in facility management industry. Today's highly sensed buildings are equipped with Building Automation Systems (BASs), which provide enormous amount of data on HVAC operations. However, the current practice of Facility Management (FM) industry has not taken the full advantage of the BAS data to improve operational performance of HVAC systems due to the lack of data analysis tools in BASs. This thesis provides a three-step data-driven approach to improve operational performance of Air Handling Units (AHUs) of HVAC systems by discovering energy efficient operational strategies.
