Özet (Çeviri)
Climate change and increased intense and frequent extreme events have negative impacts on the environment, especially water bodies. In this study, the effects of extreme weather events in the United Kingdom on Hydro-morphological Quality Elements (HMQEs) in rivers, and any possible pressures and problems on the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) were assessed. While observed meteorological data and river data sets were used for assessing the changes in the river system and weather patterns, for the future assessment UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18) data was used. It is found that during periods of extreme events, river hydro-morphology is affected especially in terms of river flows, sediments and riparian zones. While river systems are directly affected by extreme events, rivers are under the negative effects of anthropogenic activities such as dams and water abstractions that provide the protection of the effects of climate change. Additionally, any changes in the river hydro-morphology can cause other problems such as increasing water temperature and dissolved oxygen in Biological Quality Elements (BQEs) and Physico-chemical Quality Elements (PCQEs). There is no doubt that with increasing the intensity and frequency of the extreme events in the UK would cause challenges for the implementation of the WFD in terms of cost-effectiveness and sustainability. In order to deal with these problems, water policies and directives such as the WFD, and human activities on rivers should be considered and developed under the climate change projections and policies with sustainable cooperation.
