International trade means economic transactions which are made between countries. Customer goods are the most traded items includes electronic devices and clothes, capital goods include machinery and lastly raw materials and foods. The other transactions are services include travel services and foreign patent payments. But in this dissertation, it is focused on trade of goods. There are two types of trade. First one is when a country cannot produce goods by itself. Second, country has capability to produce but still choose to import these goods. Reasons for that importing might be cheaper rather than producing, more variety of goods might be available in foreign country or imported goods might have better quality. There might be some limitations in international trade such as import-export taxes, or quotas. Countries can choose protectionist measures. Protectionism means the country's trade policy have tendency to help domestic producers rather than foreign products in specific industries. The tools of protectionism are increasing the price of foreign product with import taxes or limiting the access of foreign producers to domestic market. Main reasons for protectionism are improve the terms of trade, protect domestic labor and national industry, increase employment and close foreign trade deficit. Trade war occurs when one country increases its tariffs and other country responds accordingly. During the US presidential campaign of Donald Trump, he signaled the following actions to China. Those mostly related with the unfair trade applications and the trade deficit which is huge with China. Donald Trump has brought some trade restrictions against China starting from the situation that the US has biggest trade deficit with China. US imposed tariffs on Chinese imports as a reply to China's pontificated theft of US intellectual property. China decided to take reprisals and announce tariffs to US products including frozen pork, nuts, wine and fruits. From that time, the two countries continued the motion and started to target each other directly. Therefore, the trade war between China – US started. The trade war effected customers, firms, and global economy. US has always worried about its tech companies' acquisitions to Chinese companies by remarking it as a national security issue. Huawei is one of the biggest Chinese companies affected by this trade war. US claims that 5G technology network infrastructure of Huawei may be spying for the Chinese government. US banned the high technology shipments such as 5G and artificial intelligence because of national security. US has banned the US technology companies relations with China such as Google. In the new Huawei smartphones, there is no Google features such as Google Maps, Play Store which is an application market. It is also difficult to use a smartphone without the Play Store application market to reach other applications. The aim of the research is to show the effect of the trade war between US and China on customer demand to Chinese mobile technology brands. In this research, Huawei brand is used as a case study. 206 international students studying in Hungary were selected to answer a survey. The survey consists of four parts. In the first part multiple choice questions were asked to investigate demographic characteristic of the participants. In the second part, multiple choice questions were asked customer smartphone preferences and frequency of use. In the third part, multiple choice questions were asked regarding the usage attitude towards Huawei products before and after learning Google ban. In the fourth part, the 5-point Likert scale was used to measure customer loyalty to Huawei. The survey is distributed with online channels. The data was analyzed with IBM SPSS 22 package program. Statistical data analyses are used such as Independent Sample T-Test, ANOVA, Chi-Square. The purpose of research is to examine the impacts of trade war on demand to Chinese technology company Huawei's products after the Google ban on Huawei products. The result of the survey shows that there is a significant change in Huawei preferences for their next smartphone after learning there is no Google application market or any Google product. 39% of international students that preferred Huawei changes their mind to undecided. 41% of international students who are undecided changes their minds to not preferring Huawei smartphones. According to these results, Google-Huawei conflict lowers customer demand to Huawei smartphones. It can be concluded as China may lose power in global technology market in terms of trade war.
