Özet (Çeviri)

This study focuses on the process of identity formation of second and third generation Young American Muslims, by examining the mutual interaction of Islamic identity with cultural and political identity in the social structure of the United States. Based upon the intersectional theoretical framework and the postcolonial critical lens, it aims to determine where young Muslim identity stands and what kind of a transformation occurs. Analysis of the data collected, through semi-structured interviews and participant observation method, shows that the young Muslim identity does not present a solid and stable appearance. Moreover, young Muslims are still actively seeking an identity. The inquiry reveals that young Muslims experience a mental dissociation that starts with questioning their religious, cultural, and political belonging, followed by a process of confronting Western values. In conclusion, it points out that this process of dissociation and confrontation ultimately ends in purgatory and that the purgatory stage hosts the original process of identity building and transformation of young Muslims. Unlike liberal or traditional interpretations of the religion, it argues that the original American Islam will take shape in this purgatory phase.
