Özet (Çeviri)

This dissertation focuses on the patterns that would explain why some online petitions gather thousands of signatures while others get only a few. In order to understand the dynamics of people's decision to engage in social movement action, this project examines the patterns in existing social movement events and disentangles some of the mechanisms observed through social experiments. While examining multiple structural and emergent factors that play a role in determining the support and outcome of protest, this project utilizes the number of signatures on online petitions as the exemplar. This project is an important contribution to the existing discussions in multiple disciplines such as sociology, political science, and communications. It discusses the role of the Internet for political participation and the dynamics of participation in online social movement actions. This project yields a number of useful generalizations about the dynamics of online petitions that enhance our understanding of social movements. The ultimate success of petitions results from a combination of structural factors and emergent dynamics. v Combining social experiments and secondary data analysis, this project displays the role of social networks in increasing the amount of support for an online social movement event and how the Internet became an influential tool for social movements. With regard to structural factors such as the presence of social movement organizations and the targets of online petitions, I found that petitions that are supported by social movement organizations gather more signatures. This effect is higher for petitions targeting businesses. In general, government targets are the most popular ones in regard to the number of petitions directed against them and number of signatures those petitions gather on average. As for other structural factors, I looked at the political leaning of the petition and where they are hosted as indicators of petition success. I concluded that right wing petitions gather more signatures than non-right wing petitions. Moreover, people tend to sign right wing petitions more if they are hosted on an individual website rather than an online petition platform. This project also examines the emergent dynamics that may affect the number of signatures once the petition is posted. It demonstrates that the most successful petitions cannot be predicted at an early stage in the campaign, since the ultimate success depends on accumulating a number of jolts due to activation of mobilizers and their short-lived cascades.
