The automation of assembly processes entails significant challenges for manufacturing companies due to the diversity of used equipment, the increasing product variety and the need for adaptability amid fluctuating customer demand. Reconfigurable assembly systems with modular design are intended to offer companies an advantage in managing the product variety and adapting to new production scenarios. To maintain a high quality within the product range, process monitoring must be redesigned in conjunction with the assembly equipment. A methodology for automated planning and execution of process monitoring in assembly lines is currently being researched at iwb. As a part of this methodology, the scope of this thesis is the conceptual development of a software assistance tool for the automated evaluation of the adequacy of an existing sensor configuration for new assembly processes, following the change of the assembly plant structure or product type. The concept of“skills”as elementary inspection operations is used to define the functions of sensor types and to match their capabilities to the inspection tasks. The tool is intended to assist the user in planning the monitoring system before the launch of operations. Determining inspection capabilities not available in the existing sensor configuration of the assembly system, assessing the feasibility of inspection operations and offering recommendations for action are the main functions of the planned concept.
