The agri-food sector accounts directly or indirectly for around 30% of total energy consumption all over the world, with a particularly high contribution from the poultry industry, due to the high protein ratio associated with chicken meat and egg production. Over recent decades, chicken meat production has dramatically increased approximately tenfold, and this strong growth is projected to continue steadily based on the FAO 2015–2025 outlook. In this context, the potential of decreasing the energy usage of the poultry sector with efficient and cost-effective environmental control systems and various kinds of technologies is clearly important. This study evaluates potential energy saving using solar-based systems, heat pump units, and evaporative cooling applied to poultry house, tested based on correlative literature and laboratory investigation. The main aim of this study is to develop and adopt sustainable heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technologies integrated with novel components in poultry farms to increase the welfare of chickens and decrease the level of energy consumption in this form of agricultural production. This study investigates novel technologies and their use in poultry farms to provide clean and cheap energy. There are three novel systems presented and investigated in this study: (1) a photovoltaic/thermal assisted ground source heat pump (PVT-GSHP) field study for poultry house sustainable heating; (2) a psychrometric energy core (PEC) direct cooling unit field study; and (3) a novel core-based dew point cooling unit for cooling demand (laboratory testing). PEC is a common cooling method worldwide, therefore in THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM ABSTRACT ii addition to this PEC field trial on the poultry farm, a dew point evaporative cooler was designed and tested in laboratory conditions for application in poultry farms' HVAC systems in the UK, to decrease heat stress and death issues in poultry farms. The PVT-GSHP system has novel Solar thin-tube Polyethylene heat exchangers (PHE) and copper vertical ground heat exchangers (VGHE) attached to a heat pump ducted with a buffer vessel. A full quantitative validation was made, and each innovative component was assessed under hourly (short-term) transient conditions. The system was also experimentally investigated under long-term transient condition (>1 year). The dynamic behaviours of the whole integrated system and each novel component were investigated. The COP of the whole system design was monitored over the long term and fluctuated between 2.05 and 5.17, with a maximum value of 5.17 in July, and a minimum of 2.05 in January. The seasonal COP of the system was 3.73. The simple payback period of the hybrid heating system is 8.14 years, with £4,890 total annual savings with government revenues under the condition of efficient heat pump running hours. The novel PVT-GSHP design and components are relatively cheap compared to existing heat pump and solar systems, and the validated results indicate that the PEC cooling unit and the novel and cheap PVT-GSHP integrated designs are reliable systems for agricultural applications in terms of their dynamic behaviour.
