Background: The aim of the current study is to examine existing Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies designed for elderly people's mental health and well-being. Literature shows that, The world is aging with a rapid pace, as World Health Organization in 2012 explained, and people who are 60 consist of 22% of the general population (as cited in Ghasemi et al., 2017, p.2). It is estimated that by 2030 the total number of elderly will increase to over 1 billion (Schweitzer & Hoerbst, 2016). In terms of these demographic changes, the demands involved in supporting elderly people will be a difficult challenge (Leitner, Felfernig, Fercher, & Hitz, 2014). For that reason, the needs of elderly people require further considerations in terms of their physical, social and mental health (Grootven & Achterberg, 2016). For this reason, AAL systems aim to provide technological solutions to the challenges of an aging population. Methods: The database searches for related articles were searched from“PubMed”,“Web of Sciences”and“PsycINFO”. N = 186 articles were screened based on title and abstract from which N = 104 were examined for eligibility. Total N = 15 of articles were included in the current study. Results: Results of the scoping review revealed that, traditionally AAL systems divided into four categories; 1) assessment and monitoring health status, 2) Activity monitoring, 3) Safety providing, 4) Social connectedness. Technologies that were investigated in this scoping review mainly focused on to geriatric population's physical health and aim to providing care for their daily physical functioning. Conclusions: The current study suggests that AAL technologies promise to improve elderly's autonomy by developing wearable technologies. Further research is needed to investigate technologies that are facilitating psychological health. Finally, as only certain databases used in this scoping review, more research incorporating different field is suggested.
